Trump defends midterm results, praises Pelosi, calls CNN reporter ‘terrible’”

While Democrats took control of the House of Representative for the first time in eight years on Tuesday, President Donald Trump told the country that the midterms were actually a victory for Republicans.

He noted that former President Obama lost a net 63 House seats in the 2010 midterm election and former President Bill Clinton lost 54 in the 1994 midterm election, but Trump only lost less than 30 seats.

"Think of how his position with Republicans improves", Asman said about Trump.

And, indeed, after Mr Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday, putting the Mueller probe in jeopardy, Democratic Congressman Jerry Nadler warned that he meant to lead a House Judiciary Committee examination.

The author of "A young diplomat in Trump's America" told France 24: "First of all they should think how can we respond to the fears, to the anxieties in the United States right now, from the core part of the electorate that doesn't just vote Democrat". "All you are going to do is end up in back and forth and back and forth".

"I thought it was very close to a complete victory", Trump said.

"I'd love to get along and I think after the election a lot of things can happen", Trump said.

Investigations could gridlock a White House already besieged by the Russian Federation collusion investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, heavily bogging down the administration's agenda and foiling Mr Trump's message.

"I feel just fine about it", he said. Trump called the investigation "a disgrace", saying it "should never have been started, because there is no crime".

It was "such a very Big Win", he tweeted, "and all under the pressure of a Nasty and Hostile Media!"

The White House news conference was punctuated by Trump's escalating attacks on the media. Both said they will seek the job of minority leader.

"You are a rude, bad person", Trump told Acosta.

Trump said that he was considering changes to his administration in the aftermath of the election, including to his cabinet.

Trump said he wasn't sure whether he should be happy or sad about their defeats.

Dean Heller, R-NV, was the sole Republican loss on the Senate Finance Committee, while one Democrat, Claire McCaskill, D-Mo. lost her seat on that committee.

Democrats gained seven governorships but fell short in a high-profile race in Florida, which - as Trump noted on Wednesday - is expected to play a key role in the 2020 presidential election.

Democrats will now control lower chamber panels that can investigate Mr Trump's business affairs, including tax returns, while thwarting his legislative agenda. "And if it becomes clear that this is another move to shut down the Mueller investigation, then that is something that we'll have to seriously consider".

Over the last two years there was always this sense that while the president's thunderous championing of white nationalism and anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies was hurting him in the heavily Mexican-American parts of the southwestern USA, it was the key to unlock the Rustbelt and Midwest - the part of the country seen as the one which gave him the presidency.

I could not be prouder of the organization we built together.

Trump briefly sought to strike a statesmanlike tone in his first public remarks after the loss, praising House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi for her hard work and envisioning "a lovely, bipartisan type of situation" on infrastructure investments and health care. The Democrats also busted Republican supermajorities in Michigan's Senate, North Carolina's House and Senate, and Pennsylvania's Senate.

Almost 40% of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to VoteCast, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump.

The mixed verdict in the first nationwide election of Trump's young presidency underscored the limits of his hardline immigration rhetoric in America's evolving political landscape, where college-educated voters in the nation's suburbs rejected his warnings of a migrant "invasion".

Rep. Elijah Cummings, the Maryland Democrat who is poised to take charge of the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement to The Associated Press that he intends to use the panel as "a check on the executive branch - not merely for potential criminal violations, but for much broader concerns, such as conflicts of interest, emoluments violations and waste, fraud and abuse".
