Wayne Rooney farewell ticket sales will not go to player's foundation

Wayne Rooney farewell ticket sales will not go to player's foundation”

Wayne Rooney has been brought out of worldwide retirement for one more England outing, with Callum Wilson, Jadon Sancho and Michael Keane joining him in Gareth Southgate's latest squad.

The return of record goalscorer Rooney has split opinion, with the 33-year-old set to collect a 120th cap in the November 15 friendly against the U.S. to honour his Three Lions career.

Former Three Lions captain Rooney last played for England in November 2016 but will make his 120th and final appearance for his country against the United States.

"He won't wear number 10 because he won't start the game", added Southgate.

"In terms of the captaincy, the last game he came on [as a substitute] with me, Jordan Henderson gave him the armband as soon as he ran on the pitch. I guess that will depend on the circumstances of the game and the players that are out there, but I have no issue with that at all".

Southgate did not confirm whether it was his decision to pick Rooney in his 28-player squad, when asked if there was a business motive to sell tickets for the match at Wembley.

He said: "There's still a long way to go but hopefully I can stay fit and healthy and score a few more goals".

But the Football Association made it clear that Wayne Rooney will get the captain's armband and will only make a cameo appearance. "There were a lot of experienced winners in the dressing room, and me and Wayne were close in age with similar backgrounds and we just got on and clicked", Fletcher told Sky Sports News.

"All other players would respect Wayne's contribution deserves the best possible send off".

"I understand that has caused debate but for me, it is a small way of appreciating what he has given to his country". "I suppose they are trying to make up for past mistakes".

Southgate cited the examples of the worldwide tributes paid to Lukas Podolski, David Silva and Wesley Sneijder by Germany, Spain and Netherlands respectively in recent years to justify Rooney's selection, adding that he considers the national team's heritage a vital part of the culture he is trying to build.

"I hope for him that he gets the appropriate response because I think he deserves that", said Southgate.
