Ebola: 300 People Infected In Eastern DR Congo”

The mission will visit the eastern province of North Kivu, where the focus of the current outbreak of the Ebola hemorrhagic fever virus is located.

The deadly Ebola virus has infected 300 people in Congo since an outbreak erupted nearly two months ago in the country's east, the health ministry said on Tuesday.

As of November 4, DRC had registered a total of 285 Ebola cases, with a total of 200 deaths.

The rVSV-Ebola vaccine is now being administered in DRC and is demonstrating positive protective results and potency against the Ebola virus-Zaire type.

No cases of Ebola have so far been reported in Uganda, but the authorities are implementing the plan in order to avoid the fatal consequences of previous outbreaks, which saw health workers contract the disease and die as they cared for patients.

Ebola was first reported in Congo in 1976 and is named for the river where it was recognized.

In recent months Ebola cases have been confirmed near the heavily traveled border between Uganda and Congo, where an outbreak in that country's northeast has killed 189 people.

In 2015, the rVSV-Ebola vaccine was given to more than 16,000 volunteers involved in several studies in Africa, Europe and the United States where it was found to be safe and protective against the Ebola virus.

The vaccine is only used under "compassionate use" although it is not commercially licensed.

While the vaccine is not available for public use and is considered experimental, it's being handed out under a compassionate use program, the World Health Organization said.

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) said there is not enough valid research to risk the health of pregnant women nor their future child with the investigational vaccine rVSV-ZEBOV. "Therefore, the vaccine is not available to the general population at this stage".

In December 2000, Lukwiya, a medical superintendent of Lacor Hospital in the northern district of Gulu, died along with 12 nurses after contracting the highly contagious disease, which is transmitted through contact with body fluids. "This is targeted vaccination", she emphasized.

Dr Yonas Tegegn Woldemariam the WHO Representative in Uganda, referred to the vaccination as a huge step in mitigating the risk of Ebola among health care workers.

He assured of its potency and ability to protect them effectively.
