Conjoined twin girls successfully separated at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital, Australia”

Mother Bhumchu Zangmo, who brought Nima and Dawa to Australia in October, was said to be very relieved after being told the girls are likely to have a "good result".

Crameri said if there were any unexpected problems during the operation, the hospital had all the resources and experts on hand that it would need.

Nima and Dawa underwent surgery on Friday.

But on Friday afternoon he said once they were able to successfully separate their livers without compromising their health and access the bowel without impediment the surgery was less complicated.

The cost of the flights and accommodation was covered by the Children First Foundation, an Australian-based charity that gives children from developing countries access to specialist surgeries and medical care.

"We didn't find surprises", said Joe Crameri, who led the surgery at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

Conjoined twins who flew almost 6,000 miles for a life-changing operation have been successfully separated by doctors in Australia. "This morning she used the word happy, yesterday she said she was a little bit scared and just pleased that today is finally here", Lodge told Melbourne radio station 3AW.

When the girls were given the green light on Friday, they were anaesthetised about 8.30am, before a team of four surgeons and about 18 people.

The doctors planned to split the surgical team in half once the initial separation was complete. Bhutan's only paediatrician, who has always been involved in the girls' care, travelled to Melbourne to watch the surgery.

If so it would also be divided, he said, and "our challenge will be to reconstruct their abdominal walls to close it over".

Dr Sherub first met the girls when they were only a day old and played a major role in getting the twins to Australia, having already spent time in the country as the victor of a medical scholarship.

Because doctors in their home country are not equipped to separate them, the twins flew to Australia last month for the important surgery. A few of the muscles on her limbs are not developed, because they have not been used.

The girls were separated for the first time in a six-hour surgery at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital.
