May faces renewed Brexit pressure after surprise ministerial resignation

May faces renewed Brexit pressure after surprise ministerial resignation”

Boris Johnson backed his brother's decision, saying: "We may not have agreed about Brexit but we are united in dismay at the intellectually and politically indefensible of the UK position".

However he emphasised that a "no deal" Brexit, which the government insists is the only other option, would mean "chaos" that would cause disruption, delay and deep damage to the United Kingdom economy.

"We may or may not be able to get an agreement in which case we would have to leave the European Union without one, but we're not going to be bounced into having another referendum", he said.

A government minister has quit with a stark warning over the impact on Kent of a no deal Brexit.

Theresa May's hopes of winning parliament's backing for her Brexit deal have been plunged into fresh doubt after Jo Johnson resigned from the government and accused her of offering MPs a choice between "vassalage and chaos", The Guardian reported. A second referendum on the departure is anathema to the supporters of Brexit.

A Downing Street source said the government aimed to secure an agreement with the European Union soon, but not at any cost.

The DUP leader said "no unionist" could back Mrs May's apparent advocacy of a withdrawal treaty that includes a Northern Ireland specific backstop measure to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.

He added that "it has become increasingly clear to me that the withdrawal agreement, which is being finalised in Brussels and Whitehall will be a bad mistake".

While in September senior party figures indicated support for a second referendum couldn't be ruled out, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell indicated that it was only the terms of leaving that could be put to the public rather than whether Britain should exit or not. "It does not remotely correspond to the mandate of the people in June 2016".

Instead, Johnson said it would be proper to give the British public a chance to vote again because of the way the Brexit negotiations have evolved.

Jo Johnson agreed the government's Brexit plan would leave it "with no say in the European Union rules it must follow".

The departing minister noted Brexit had divided Britain, political parties and "families too", but added: "what is now being proposed won't be anything like what was promised two years ago" during the referendum campaign. The development comes a day after Jo Johnson quit as transport minister.

The resignation of such a high-profile figure, just days after Britain suggested it was close to a deal is seen as hugely significant. potentially leading to other Conservative MPs and Ministers speaking out in favour of a second referendum.
