Trump joins Macron and world leaders at armistice ceremony

Trump joins Macron and world leaders at armistice ceremony”

Trump and Macron met on Saturday morning, following social media tension between the two presidents.

Do we govern ourselves as sovereign nation-states and sovereign citizens or as interdependent global communities of world citizens?

Macron replied: "I do believe we need more European capacities, more European defense".

Yet, here is the way Macron attempted to redefine the terms on fly in Paris today. "We must have a Europe that can defend itself more, without just relying on the U.S".

Trump took umbrage at a recent interview in which Macron talked about the need for a European army and listed the USA along with Russian Federation and China as potential threats to national security.

Trump, who ran on an "America First" platform, has jarred European allies with his actions.

"Europe is a powerful economic entity, a powerful economic union and it is quite natural that it wants to be independent, self-sufficient and sovereign in matters of defence and security,"Putin told RT television".

U.S. President Donald Trump took great pains on Sunday to separate himself from other world leaders marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

"President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the US, China and Russian Federation", the US president tweeted, referring to remarks made by Macron in an interview three days earlier.

Trump, ostensibly the main target of Macron's message, sat stony-faced.

"Mr. Macron, look up the word "nationalism" in a dictionary", he said.

He referred to a recent radio interview in which Mr. Macron called for a larger European military force to repel threats from "China, Russia and even the United States".

On the sidelines, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian discussed how to strengthen NATO, Iran, North Korea and Syria, US spokesperson Heather Nauert said.

Macron has attempted to stand as a vocal counterweight to Trump, who recently called himself a "nationalist" and has moved to set the USA apart from global treaties, including the Iran nuclear deal, the Paris climate accord ad a United Nations programme for refugees. "It will seem like heaven to me to be once more where there is peace and only peace".

"The American and French patriots of World War I embody the timeless virtues of our two republics", Trump said during a ceremony at Suresnes American Cemetery near Paris.

Most of the world leaders attending the Armistice Day event were transported to the ceremony site in buses, and then marched together down the Champs-Elysees towards the Arc de Triomphe.

"The old demons are rising again", he intoned.

The fighting proved America's mettle to allies and foes alike, and by the time the war ended U.S. forces were at least an equal to any of the other major armies, which were exhausted and depleted.

The visit is meant to symbolise the close ties between two countries that fought three wars between 1870 and 1945 but are now seen as the lynchpins of peace in Western Europe.

The German chancellor will be first to speak Sunday afternoon at a Forum for Peace which Macron hopes will help foster multilateralism.

Erdoğan received a warm welcome on Saturday upon arriving in Paris.

The WWI commemorations come at a watershed moment for the liberal post-war order, with anti-immigration populists at the helm in the USA and Brazil, sharing power in Italy, and making strong gains in Germany, where Merkel has announced her resignation in 2021.
