CNN Suing The White House

CNN Suing The White House”

CNN's lawsuit against the White House for revoking reporter Jim Acosta's press credentials after a testy press conference exchange could test the constitutional limits of President Trump's fondness for sparring with the press. "But with the White House drawing the line in the sand, prompting CNN to file the suit, other news organizations feel like they have to stand up for the journalistic principle".

"The President and White House possess the same broad discretion to regulate access to the White House for journalists (and other members of the public) that they possess to select which journalists receive interviews, or which journalists they acknowledge at press conferences", lawyers said in the filing, according to CNN. In 2009, CNN supported Fox News' right to take part in a White House event during the Obama administration.

A district judge has ordered the Trumpadministration to respond to the lawsuit by 4pm GMT on Wednesday, with a hearing set for 8.30pm.

In the lawsuit, the network said it seeks an immediate restraining order restoring press access for Acosta.

The row on live national television and Acosta's resulting banishment triggered a wave of accusations that Trump is stifling the free press, and marked a sharp escalation in tensions between the president and CNN, a frequent target of his ire.

Hours later, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders announced Acosta's hard pass had been suspended, a rare if not unprecedented move that she justified by claiming the reporter was inappropriately "placing his hands" on the intern. Media outlets jealously guard their prerogatives - and White House access is the lifeblood of their business. Acosta's press credentials were revoked after a testy exchange with President Donald Trump at a post-midterms press conference, and CNN Communications is thanking its competitor for the brief. "We can't have the White House tossing people out because they don't like what they are saying or what they are reporting".

Previously, the White House Correspondents' Association - which represents the press corps at the presidential residence - urged the administration to reverse "this weak and misguided action".

"The stated rationale for the revocation of Mr. Acosta's pass-that he was disrupting press proceedings-is evident from the video he has proffered, is entirely viewpoint- and content-neutral, and clears this limited bar [prohibiting arbitrary and less than compelling reasons]", the administration argued.

Jameel Jaffer, executive director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, said the White House's actions have a troublesome chilling effect.

The right-wing Fox News has been much more favorable to Donald Trump's presidency than CNN-where hosts like Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo have been persistent Trump critics-or the liberal-leaning MSNBC. "Reporters should be able to go to the White House and cover presidents without fear of reprisal".
