‘MAKE FRANCE GREAT AGAIN!’: Trump Goes Ballistic, Attacks Macron, Mocks France”

The president highlighted Macron's low approval rating and high unemployment in France, suggesting the French people disagree with Macron's sentiments.

President Trump did not visit a World War I cemetery in northern France this weekend because his motorcade would have disrupted traffic in Paris and nearby suburbs for hours, an administration official told Fox News Sunday. In a flurry of early morning tweets yesterday, Mr Trump mocked Mr Macron for comments about European defence, said the young leader was highly unpopular, that French trading practices were unfair and that the country's economy was in ruins.

Trump had already berated Macron in a tweet from Air Force One just as he landed in Paris, calling the French proposals for European defence "very insulting".

He also complained about tariffs on USA wines in France, appeared to take a dig at President Emmanuel Macron's approval ratings, and attempted to defend his self-proclaimed nationalism by saying, "There is no country more Nationalist than France", all in a matter of hours.

Trump conceded that while France makes "very good wine" (an interesting claim from Trump, who doesn't drink), the country "makes it hard for the USA to sell its wine into France, and charges very big tariffs".

Trump took exception last week to the idea that France needs protection from the US, calling it "very insulting", and he continued to fume against the call Tuesday on Twitter.

He called French wine tariffs "not fair" and said they "must change".

Accusing Macron of suggesting building its own army to protect Europe against the United States, Trump tweeted that "it was Germany in World Wars One & Two". Pay for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or not!'

However, Trump spent the past weekend in Paris to commemorate the 100th anniversary of WWI where strained relations between the American president and European allies was on full display.

"We have never posed any threat to Europe", Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said, when asked about the issue at a daily press briefing in Beijing. French President had last month criticized Belgium's decision to buy USA -made F-35 fighter jets instead of European planes, saying it "goes against European interests". Speech next day at American Cemetary (sic) in pouring rain!

Mr Trump also threatened wine tariffs against France in the rant on the social network.

Gerard Araud, France's ambassador to the USA, challenged Trump, tweeting, "For the sake of truth, Pres.EmmanuelMacron didn't say that European Union needed an army "against the US".

Trump may have been guided partly by people responsible for his safety and security, but his actions came across as a snub to his country's war dead, against the background of countless video clips of other leaders standing in the rain at important ceremonial events.

The French leader appeared to rebuke his counterpart in a speech condemning nationalism on Sunday during a visit to France by President Trump.

Trump also defended his decision to cancel a trip Saturday (local time) to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery at Belleau Wood in Northern France after rainy weather grounded his helicopter.
