Canada in talks with Pakistan over possibly taking in Aasia Bibi

Canada in talks with Pakistan over possibly taking in Aasia Bibi”

While AFP said the discussions were about potentially offering Bibi and her family asylum, this was not confirmed by a government spokesman in Ottawa.

Pakistan's government struggling with a crisis surrounding a Christian woman acquitted of blasphemy charges after eight years on death row says it is having to deal with fake images on social media purporting to show her leaving the country.

"There is a delicate domestic context that we respect which is why I don't want to say any more about that, but I will remind people Canada is a welcoming country", he said.

Asia Bibi's husband has said the family is in danger and has pleaded for asylum from the UK, US or Canada. They've also filed a petition to repeal her Supreme Court acquittal.

Bibi's conviction stemmed from a 2009 incident when she was asked to fetch water while out working in the fields.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has warned radical religious groups against using her plight to further their political aims with street protests.

Blasphemy is a highly charged issue in Pakistan, where mere allegations or accusations that someone had insulted the Prophet Muhammad can incite mobs into a frenzy of violence.

In a deal with the hard-line Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP) party that ended the protests, the Pakistani government on November 3 indicated that it will bar Bibi from traveling overseas pending a "review" of the Supreme Court's decision.

A three-judge special bench headed by Justice Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel heard Asiya's 2014 appeal against her conviction and death sentence and overturned the ruling in favour of her. Wilson Chowdhry of the British Pakistani Christian Association said: "Britain was concerned about potential unrest in the country, attacks on embassies and civilians".

The Punjab government has submitted an interim report on the losses suffered by the province during the protests held by the religious against the acquittal of Asiab Bibi in a blasphemy case to the Supreme Court. Hardline Muslims protested at her release, demanding she is hanged.
