Paradise lost: California fires rage on”

The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management said Saturday the Arizona personnel and equipment will handle assignments that include fire suppression and backfilling for local fire departments. Trump said "billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!" he added.

Three raging infernos on both ends of California have killed at least nine people, wiped out an entire town and forced a quarter million people from their homes.

On Friday, Trump issued an emergency declaration providing federal funds for Butte, Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Paradise Mayor Jody Jones said 80 to 90% of homes in residential neighborhoods are gone following the Camp Fire.

California fire officials said crews gave up fighting the flames Thursday and instead helped people get out alive.

About 800km to the north, nine people were found dead in and around the Northern California town of Paradise, where more than 6,700 homes and businesses were burned down by the Camp Fire. "I just pray the winds are in our favor".

The blaze broke out early Thursday and has grown at an astonishing rate of 80 football fields per minute.

- Officials said there have been two incidents of looting as the 70,000-acre Woolsey Fire continues to burn through Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

A total of 6,453 homes had been destroyed in Paradise and elsewhere, Honea said, along with 260 commercial buildings.

In Los Angeles, another, smaller fire in Griffith Park forced the Los Angeles Zoo to evacuate a number of show birds and some small primates on Friday as flames came within less than 2 miles (3 km) of the facility, zoo officials said in a statement. Evacuation orders included the entire city of Malibu that is home to some of Hollywood's biggest stars. About 35 people have been reported missing, authorities said. They were backed up by helicopters and water tankers.

"It was absolutely dark", said resident Mike Molloy, who said he made a decision based on the wind to leave Thursday morning, packing only the minimum and joining a sea of other vehicles.

No injuries were officially reported, but sheriff's detectives Saturday are investigating the discovery of two bodies in the 33000 block of Mulholland Highway, but could not confirm whether the deaths were fire-related.

Hundreds of thousands across the region remain under evacuation orders, and could stay that way for days as winds pick up again. Evacuation centers also were established at Canoga Park Senior High School at 6850 Topanga Canyon Canoga Park, at Rancho Santa Susana Recreation Center at 5005-C Los Angeles Simi Valley and at Taft High School at 5461 Winnetka Woodland Hills, although it was reported to be at capacity.
