Rohingya repatriation move falters

Rohingya repatriation move falters”

United Nations bodies and global organizations have been clear that conditions for the Rohingya to return to Myanmar are clearly insufficient, they said. Aid officials said the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) earlier formed 14 teams to interview the short-listed refugee families and they have said no to repatriation.

He said they had come to Bangladesh after Myanmar came up with the idea of issuing National Verification Cards (NVC) for Rohingya. He said that about 150 Rohingyas (30 families) were supposed to be repatriated through the Ghundhum point of Bandarban on Thursday.

"Any Rohingya refugee who genuinely wishes to return to Myanmar has the right to do so, and UNHCR are playing an important role in establishing this", said Nicholas Bequelin.

The Myanmar government have assured the worldwide community the Rohingya will then be housed in new homes built in Maungdaw, one of the three areas the Rohingya had lived before the crackdown, though they will not be allowed to travel outside of the township.

Mr Volker said there were still about 125,000 stateless Rohingyas confined to internal displacement camps in Myanmar's Rakhine state, where refugees will be repatriated to.

The UN refugee agency UNHCR also has advised against the returns, saying safety should be assessed first. "We have not been able to verify any of this willingness for people to go back", he told RN Breakfast. "We gave them shelter, so why should we send them back forcibly?" he argued.

Late last month, a group of Rohingya refugees sent a list of 10 demands to Myanmar leader's Aung San Suu Kyi, saying the beleagured community would return only when its demands were met. She said she had never asked to return to Myanmar, and that she had sent her children to a school run by aid workers Thursday morning as usual.

"If we have to receive the NVC again after we return, we will leave the camps here and will commit suicide by jumping in the river", he said. It's not the responsibility of the government of Bangladesh to create conditions conducive for return to Myanmar.

According to a UN-brokered deal with Bangladesh and Myanmar, the Rohingya can not be forced to repatriate.

He said the repatriation process would not be canceled. "As our principal is to ensure the repatriation must be safe, dignified and with voluntary as well as sustainable, we will work on that".

The International Committee of the Red Cross is one of the few humanitarian organizations operating in Rakhine state.

Our ethnic identity "Rohingya" must be recognized as an official ethnic group as before 1970s.

"This is a reckless move which puts lives at risk", said Nicholas Bequelin, Amnesty International's Regional Director for East and Southeast Asia.

US Vice President Mike Pence has confronted Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi at the ASEAN summit about what is being done to hold those responsible for the persecution of the Rohingya ethnic minority in her country to account.

The premier said China attaches great importance to its ties with Myanmar and stands ready to build on the tradition of friendship, enhance political mutual trust and increase the practical cooperation, thereby facilitating the continued steady progress in the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two sides. Myanmar's government has denied the accusations.

More than 720,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar's Rakhine state into Bangladesh after a military crackdown in August 2017 that the United Nations (UN) has said calls for a genocide investigation.

The refugees largely live in camps near Myanmar's border with Bangladesh, particularly near the city of Cox's Bazar. "These people are trying to survive as human beings with their rights, honor, and dignity with their freedom of religion, but they are being labeled as terrorists".

Since Aug. 25, 2017, almost 24,000 Rohingya Muslims have been killed by Myanmar's state forces, according to a report by the Ontario International Development Agency (OIDA). Marked by their religion and their language - most speak a dialect of Bengali, while most of their neighbors speak Rakhine - they are easy to target.
