'Total Incompetence': Outrage As My Health Opt-Out Website Crashes, Phones Jammed

'Total Incompetence': Outrage As My Health Opt-Out Website Crashes, Phones Jammed”

"This will give Parliament enough time to pass further protections".

Hearing reports of people having trouble opting out of #MyHealthRecord today as the website keeps crashing and the phones have a recorded message that they are too busy.

But Health Minister Greg Hunt has stressed there really is there no single deadline to leave the system, with Australians able to permanently delete their record at any point.

Mr Hunt's office said the Australian Digital Health Agency had "no evidence that any of these matters led to unauthorised access to any individuals' health information".

Labor had been attempting to extend the deadline by 12 months, but that proposal was voted down in the Senate 32-30, before senators instead back One Nation leader Pauline Hanson's January 31 proposal.

It's not just your doctors who can see these health details; almost 700,000 health practitioners including your dietitian, podiatrist or occupational therapist can see these details if they are registered to use the system unless you set up access controls.

King also called on the government to improve its public information campaign on the scheme so people can make an informed choice on whether to opt out of My Health Record.

Australians did have until tomorrow, November 15, to opt out of the My Health Record scheme, or else a record would have automatically been created for them.

The troubled My Health Record system is in meltdown this morning, with overwhelmed call-takers scrambling to deal with the volume of calls and online requests to opt out.

About 1.1 million Australians have so far opted out of the electronic health record system, while more than 300,000 have opted in.

Labor is this morning moving in federal Parliament to extend the opt-out deadline by a year to allow privacy concerns to be addressed before the system goes live.

"Labor's plan to delay and derail the roll-out of the My Health Record was blocked today", Hunt said, continuing his habit of framing criticism of the My Health Record system as party politics.

"In addition, they can subsequently delete certain parts of their records once they have been upload".

"My Health Record was created to save lives".

Some doctors don't seem to have the capacity to add information to My Health Record?

"To my knowledge, there is now no public disclosure of the precise security controls and technologies deployed for My Health Record, nor have audits been published or even their summaries", Ralph Holz, an expert in cybersecurity from the University of Sydney, tells The Daily Swig.

"The Australian Digital Health Agency notifies the OAIC in all instances where there may have been a "notifiable data breach" which is a defined term".

Among those voicing their concerns was the Australian Rail Tram and Bus Industry Union (RTBU), which said it was anxious that the system would make it easier for employers, as they have in the past, to demand access to health records.

The Australian Digital Health Agency said the opt-out helpline and website would be operating 24 hours, seven days a week until the deadline had passed.

It started as an opt-in scheme - the Coalition government changed it to an opt-out.

Take steps "to ensure the ongoing protection of de-identified data and health information used by, or disclosed to, persons for research or public health purposes and that the data and information is being used and disclosed only for those purposes".

Another concern was that perpetrators of domestic violence might be able to find the addresses of former partners, particularly if both are parents and have access to their children's data.
