US Report to Detail Costs of Climate Change as Trump Downplays Threat

US Report to Detail Costs of Climate Change as Trump Downplays Threat”

When people say the wildfires, hurricanes and heat waves they're experiencing are unlike anything they've seen before, there's a reason for that, and it's called climate change.

The landmark new report, which comes from more than a dozen federal agencies and is known as the National Climate Assessment, includes more than 1,000 pages and the work of more than 300 authors breaking down climate change's impacts in specific regions across the country, touching on everything from agricultural changes to sea-level rise to health effects.

"We are seeing the things we said would be happening, happen now in real life", said report co-author Katharine Hayhoe of Texas Tech University. "In many cases, however, addressing the full range of future climate change requires substantial changes in organizational practices and procedures, in public- and private-sector institutions, in individual and societal expectations and norms, in capital investment planning and in laws", the reports states.

There will be more mosquito- and tickborne diseases like zika, dengue and chikungunya.

"U.S. residents are now being forced to cope with dangerously high temperatures, rising seas, deadly wildfires, torrential rainfalls and devastating hurricanes".

The idea is to raise more awareness ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Poland, taking place over the first couple of weeks in December.

Achieving either of these temperature targets will require transformations in many aspects of our society, including the way we use and produce energy, the way we grow and consume food, and how we transport ourselves.

"Adaptation and mitigation policies and programs that help individuals, communities, and states prepare for the risks of a changing climate reduce the number of injuries, illnesses and deaths from climate-related health outcomes", the report stated.

A new U.S. government report has delivered a dire warning about climate change and its devastating impact, saying that the economy could lose hundreds of billions of dollars by the end of the century.

The Lower 48 states have warmed 1.8 degrees (1 degree Celsius) since 1900 with 1.2 degrees in the last few decades, according to the repot.

What makes the report different from others is that it focuses on the United States, then goes more local and granular.

Stating that humans are the reason behind the 90% of the rise in temperature, the report asserted that the USA will be as much as will be 3-12 degrees hotter by the end of the century. "Sadly, the fact that the Administration released this important report on the Friday after Thanksgiving clearly shows its desire to squelch its impact".

Trump has called worries about global warming a "hoax" perpetuated by the Chinese, and just this week he sent out a tweet noting that the East Coast's winter chill "could shatter ALL RECORDS - Whatever happened to Global Warming?"

Friday's report seemed to anticipate such comments, saying: "Over shorter timescales and smaller geographic regions, the influence of natural variability can be larger than the influence of human activity ..."

The assessment's dire conclusions are at odds with President Trump's efforts to dismiss the threat of climate change and his administration's push to slash environmental regulations and allow more planet-warming pollution. The officials said the content of the report was free from interference, but declined to directly answer several questions about whether the White House ordered the report to be released on Black Friday, a day when many Americans are disconnected with the news.

"It is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century", according to that report.

The NCA4 further highlights the consequences of climate change that we are facing.

The report, like many before it, stresses the importance of cutting greenhouse gas emissions and investing in renewable energy technology before it's too late.
