'I don't believe' own administration's climate report”

The report's conclusions fly in the face of the Trump administration's efforts to countermand President Obama's policies to reduce global warming, including limiting future increases in fuel economy, scrapping a program to clean up power plants-which would have helped make current and future electric vehicles cleaner-promoting electricity production from coal, and withdrawing the US from the Paris Climate Accord. President Donald Trump was panned on Monday for his dismissal of his own administration's recently released climate assessment. But Trump's critics said leaving the Paris agreement means the United States is allowing others to lead the global fight to curb climate change. The report notes the last few years have smashed US records for damaging weather, costing almost $400 billion since 2015.

"I've seen it, I've read some of it, and it's fine", he said.

A new US government report says climate change is affecting the United States. Sea ice will melt and coral reef ecosystems will dissolve. Extreme heat will cause more deaths. Pipelines will become unsafe.

"Even if significant emissions reductions occur, numerous effects from sea level rise over this century - and particularly through mid-century - are already locked in due to historical emissions", the report explains, underscoring the necessity for coastal communities to prepare.

On the horizon is "the potential need for millions of people and billions of dollars of coastal infrastructure to be relocated".

According to the report, released on Friday, climate change will "cause growing losses to American infrastructure and property and impede the rate of economic growth over this century".

Trump has argued that "raking" forests would mitigate wildfire risk, and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has backed up the president's assertions, claiming that poor forest management was the real risk - not climate change.

And the damage will be long-lasting. Florida is predicted to suffer the country's biggest financial fallout, at $100.9 billion a year, related to climate change, according to a study published in Science Magazine.

The White House has allegedly dismissed the report as a partisan hit job by Obama loyalists who relied on "extreme models" to draw conclusions. Playing games with report release schedules won't change that.

However, weather and climate are two different things, and "it's just flawed logic to identify a cold day or a week with disproving climate change", explains Marshall Shepherd, an atmospheric sciences professor at the University of Georgia, former president of the American Meteorological Society and host of the "Weather Geeks" podcast.
