Newcastle marches on despite Ritchie horror miss

Newcastle marches on despite Ritchie horror miss”

Sam Vokes pulled one back for Burnley shortly before the break with a looping header from 15 metres, with Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka caught out of position after a long ball by Mee.

Newcastle United's Ciaran Clark, left, celebrates scoring against Burnley during the English Premier League soccer match at Turf Moor, Burnley, England, Monday Nov. 26, 2018.

"We had an idea of how to play, we knew crosses would come from everywhere, we defended well, our effort and attitude was great", the Spaniard told Sky Sports.

Having failed to win any of their first 10 games in the Premier League, Newcastle have beaten Watford, Bournemouth and Burnley in succession to move out of the relegation zone and four points clear of the bottom three.

"We stuck to the gameplan".

Newcastle have now scored the joint-second most headed goals in the Premier League this season with over half their finishes coming aerially; Clark the beneficiary this time of an exquisite Ritchie cross in the first half.

Mikel Oyarzabal put the home side after 37 minutes with his third goal of the campaign.

A run of six games without a win has seen Burnley slide back to within a point of the foot of the table, and boss Sean Dyche was frustrated to concede more sloppy goals but happy with the response.

The game kicked off 30 minutes late after referees' assessor Eddie Wolstenholme collapsed in the tunnel and was taken to hospital.

The hosts' attempts to do so were largely woeful and the frustration from their fans was growing even before more poor defending allowed Newcastle to double their lead in the 23rd minute.

DeAndre Yedlin made an ingenious steal on the right flank, and Hart's partial save looked to have goal written all over it only for Matt Ritchie to miss from within two yards of the near post.

Joeslu then hit the post before Yedlin make an important block at the other end to preserve Newcastle's lead.
