Microsoft dethrones Apple as the most valuable United States company”

At the same time, shares of Apple rose 0.63 per cent, leaving its stock market value at $823-billion.

Near 1800 GMT, Microsoft hit an overall market capitalisation of $812.9 billion, just ahead of Apple's $812.6 billion, according to Bloomberg News.

For a few minutes on Monday, Microsoft beat Apple to become the publicly traded company.

But with all this movement, those top players are snapping at each others heels, and nowhere is this more evident than yesterday, when Microsoft briefly overtook Apple as the biggest tech company by valuation.

A Microsoft logo is seen a day after Microsoft's $26.2 billion purchase of LinkedIn, in Los Angeles, California, US, on June 14, 2016.

If the company can continue to deliver in that area, maybe it will reach this milestone again; preferably on a more permanent level.

Global demand for smartphones has slowed in recent years, making it more hard for Apple to increase its revenue.

The main reason why Apple quickly lost its status this month of November is the steady decline of its market cap due to growing concerns over the weak sales of its new iPhones and following the company's decision to no longer disclose the unit sales of its iPhones, iPads and Mac devices.

Obviously, the value of major tech companies like Microsoft and Apple changes all the time, and Microsoft probably won't retain its position for long (Apple has already retaken its place as of writing). When he took over in 2014, Nadella said he wanted to focus on its subscription-based businesses and the cloud. Just last month, Amazon and Google parent Alphabet were also ahead of Microsoft in market capitalization.
