GM To Close Oshawa Assembly Plant In 2019

GM To Close Oshawa Assembly Plant In 2019”

The closure of the Oshawa plant and the almost 3,000 jobs that will be lost have raised concerns of ripple effects through the supply chain, with Unifor estimating every job represents seven spin off jobs in the local economy.

GM says it is maintaining its profitable lineup of SUVs and trucks but will shift away from some of its smaller vehicles that haven't seen strong sales.

He said the move was part of a wider need to stay nimble and adapt, especially after the 2008 recession.

Oshawa's GM plant has been in operation since 1953 and at one point employed about 40,000 workers.

And just three years ago, Oshawa took a hit when GM moved production of the Chevrolet Camaro to MI, slicing 1,000 jobs in Ontario.

After the shocking announcement about the Oshawa plant, the frightening reality is, we just don't know. It is part of a wider restructuring that will eliminate 15,000 jobs, GM said on Monday.

Calling it a sad day for Durham, Premier Doug Ford said he will do "everything possible" to support the GM workers. We really did. We've invested so much. "I have certainly expressed my willingness to be a part of looking for a solution that takes those smart people and the assets that we have and tries to find a way in which they can contribute".

"We're not buying the argument that nothing can be done", said Unifor president Jerry Dias following the meeting. GM propulsion plants in White Marsh, Maryland and Warren, Michigan will also be shut.

"This country has done a lot for General Motors".

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Magna Auto Systems says it's too early to tell what kind of impact the GM closures will have on auto parts makers here.

"I felt like someone kicked me in the stomach", said David Green, a local union president. "They are showing that we can do this better than anybody in the world and we will perform here and show people that we can do this well". The Impala is built at the GM plant in Oshawa.

At the time of the transfer, Dias said Carlisle's appointment to head Cadillac would raise his profile and influence within GM's headquarters in Detroit, and that "would be a huge benefit for us".

Last week, the Canadian government gave corporations like GM a tax giveaway of 14 billion Canadian dollars (about 10.5 billion US dollars) to guarantee jobs remain in Canada. "We think it's appropriate to do it at a time, and get in front of it, while the company is strong and while the economy is strong".

Some of the closing plants could reopen in the future depending on the outcome of next year's labor negotiations with the United Auto Workers union.
