CDC: Kentucky ranks fifth in the nation for 2017 overdose deaths

CDC: Kentucky ranks fifth in the nation for 2017 overdose deaths”

The US witnessed the most deaths in a single year, since official records began, in 2017, with suicide and drug overdose deaths soaring among an aging population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The "statistics are a wake-up call that we are losing too many Americans, too early and too often, to conditions that are preventable", said CDC Director Robert Redfield.

As drug overdose deaths have risen, so too have suicides, steadily increasing among already-suicide-prone men. The elevated rate of these deaths, categorized as "unintentional injuries", was seen across both sexes and all age groups. And it is thanks in large part to increases in drug overdose death and suicide, according to supplementary reports simultaneously released by the CDC. The rate in rural areas was 13.1 per 100,000 with urban areas having a rate of 9.6 per 100,000.

In 2016, 21.6 per cent more people died from overdoses compared to 2015. In 1999, the most urban counties in the United States had a suicide rate of 9.6 deaths per 100,000 people.

Place also mattered when it came to drug overdose deaths, with some states registering higher numbers than others, the report shows. Death rates decreased for people between 45 and 54 years old. "Tragically, this troubling trend is largely driven by deaths from drug overdose and suicide", he said in a press release. The data also show that the increased deaths correspond strongly with the use of synthetic opioids known as fentanyls. These synthetic opioids account for approximately double the number of deaths caused by natural and semisynthetic opioids like oxycodone and hydrocodone, which saw a leveling off in associated deaths between 2016 and 2017.

Final longevity numbers for 2014 through 2016 were published September 20 in Health, United States, 2017, an annual report produced by the NCHS.

As usual, women will continue to outlive men.

The male life expectancy was 76.1 years, down a tenth of a year from 2016.

In 2017, the USA had 2.8 million deaths or nearly 70,000 more than the previous year.

Then in 2015, there was a downturn-a small one, to 78.8 years.

The most striking trend in suicide deaths is their geographic distribution.

Age-specific death rates between 2016 and 2017 increased for age groups 25-34, 35-44, and 85 and over.

Among the 10 leading causes of death, only cancer deaths fell while there were increases in suicide, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's, flu/pneumonia, chronic lower respiratory diseases and unintentional injuries. This grim "top 10 list" remained unchanged from the previous year.

The modern trend seems to be propelled by steady increases in deaths by suicide and drugs, according to the new data. The rate increased by an average of 10 percent per year from 1999 to 2006, by 3 percent per year from 2006 to 2014, and a staggering 16 percent per year from 2014 to 2017.

Among females, the rate increased 53 percent from 4 suicides per 100,000 in 1999 to almost 6 per 100,000 in 2017.

The figure was 6,600 higher than in the previous 12 months.

Appleby, who overcame her own battles with mental illness, says she is a little surprised though at the national stat that shows the suicide rate is up 26% among men since 1999 but up 53% among women in that time.

Most notable is the widening gap between urban and rural Americans.

"The latest CDC data show that the United States life expectancy has declined over the past few years".
