FDA lifts romaine lettuce ban

FDA lifts romaine lettuce ban”

"Romaine lettuce that was harvested outside of the Central Coast growing regions of northern and central California does not appear to be related to the current outbreak, ' Gottlieb said".

The CDC, which is the Center for Disease Control, has recently given a warning to the people of USA regarding an outbreak of E. coli, which has caused problems for a large number of people in the region.

Now, the Malaysian Ministry of Health has issued a statement yesterday (26th November), confirming that Malaysia does import Romaine lettuce from the US and the ministry has been screening the imported lettuce using the "Stop, Test, and Release" protocol that was initiated on 23rd November. Several major romaine lettuce producers have agreed to label products with a harvest date by region, and new romaine from different growing regions, including Florida and Arizona, is being restocked in grocery shelves.

As the FDA chief, Scott Gottlieb, noted on November 22 on Twitter, there's now no way to know where romaine was picked.

"If consumers, retailers, and food service facilities are unable to identify that romaine lettuce products are not affected - which means determining that the products were grown outside the California regions that appear to be implicated in the current outbreak investigation -we urge that these products not be purchased, or if purchased, be discarded or returned to the place of purchase", he said.

The FDA said the industry committed to making the labelling standard for romaine and to consider longer-term labelling options for other leafy greens.

Romaine growers across the country were impacted by the CDC announcement however with the product being pulled from store shelves days before Thanksgiving.

Even though romaine from the Yuma, Arizona, region is not implicated in the current outbreak, it was blamed for an E. coli outbreak this spring that sickened more than 200 people and killed five.

People shouldn't eat romaine that doesn't have the label information, according to the FDA.

At least 22 people in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick have been sickened in the outbreak.

"Romaine as a category has had a year that's been unfortunate", Whitaker said.

The labels could also help health officials identify specific regions during future outbreak investigations. One person developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. Individuals who became ill are between 5 and 93 years of age.

If you would like to find out more information, you can contact your nearest state and district health office accessible via the Health Ministry's portal here, or you could get in touch with the Malaysian Food and Safety Quality Division via Facebook here.

The CDC has advised consumers to throw away any romaine lettuce they have in any form, such as whole heads, hearts or salad mixes containing it.

But strains that produceShiga toxin cause illnesses.
