President Trump Threatens GM's EV Subsidies Over Layoffs

President Trump Threatens GM's EV Subsidies Over Layoffs”

If Brown's bill were passed, those companies would pay the 21 percent tax rate if the company has fewer US employees than they did when the tax bill was passed and the company increased the number of full-time employees at their foreign facilities.

GM, which said it has invested more than $22 billion in us operations since it came out of bankruptcy in 2009, has tried to appease the Trump administration while justifying its decisions.

The White House confirmed the call and used similar language, saying: "The two leaders discussed their disappointment in the announced closures of General Motors plants in their respective countries and their plans for the upcoming G20 Summit".

The administration has for months been considering imposing dramatic new tariffs on imported vehicles. The president also threatened to eliminate tax credits awarded to consumers who buy the company's electric vehicles, as well as other tax breaks and subsidies.

Treasury whittled down its GM stake through a series of stock sales starting in November 2010, with the remaining shares sold in December 2013 at a $11.2 billion loss. We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies, including for electric cars.

Countries that send cars to the USA have taken advantage of the country for decades, he said.

It's not clear precisely what action against GM might be taken, or when, and there are questions about whether the president has the authority to act without congressional approval.

"It's the classic Trump thing of policies he supports working against goals he also supports", Dutta added.

Also, BMW didn't announce a major new plant, but its CEO said Tuesday the company is considering a new USA engine factory to supply assembly plants in SC and Mexico.

Elected Ohio officials are reaching out in different ways to soften General Motors' decision to cease operations at the Lordstown complex in March, including a U.S. Senate bill, a plea to another large automaker and a meeting with the vice president. A total of 6,500 factory jobs will be cut as well.

Fiat Chrysler announced in January of this year that it would move production of certain trucks from Mexico to an existing plant in Warren, Michigan.

After all, it was not only factory workers who will lose their jobs. Trump believes that foreign countries dump low-priced items in the USA and make it hard for U.S. manufacturers to compete, a trend that he says has destroyed millions of jobs. "And GM would not be closing their plants in Ohio, Michigan & Maryland". US taxpayers lost more than $10 billion in the rescue of the company during the financial crisis a decade ago.

The United Auto Workers union said it would challenge the move through "every legal, contractual and collective bargaining avenue open to our membership", and politicians on both sides of the aisle also slammed the layoffs. The United States slapped an additional 25 percent tariff on Chinese-made vehicles earlier this year, prompting China to retaliate.

"So, while we're paying relatively little in the way of tariffs on steel, the price of domestic steel has increased as a result of the tariff, saddling us with hundreds of millions of dollars in new, unplanned cost", Schostek said.
