Spire Taps AWS Ground Station to Extend Ground Station Network

Spire Taps AWS Ground Station to Extend Ground Station Network”

That's what went down at re:Invent on Monday night, when the world's largest cloud provider AWS announced that renting Arm servers at low costs is now a reality.

AWS also announced the availability of two new networking offerings: Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) - a network adapter for Amazon EC2 instances that delivers the performance of on-premises HPC clusters with AWS's elasticity and scalability; and AWS Global Accelerator, a fully managed service that uses AWS's global backbone and edge locations to improve the availability and performance of applications running in one or more AWS regions. Through this integration, customers using AWS Ground Station gain the ability to download data from multiple satellites at the same time and to continue downloading data even when unplanned outages like a weather event impact parts of the network. Smaller companies who can't afford their own kit often end up signing inflexible, long-term contracts with third parties that own and run such stations.

For example, as fast-moving environmental, geopolitical or news events unfold on the ground, AWS Ground Station customers can downlink current data to any of the 12 AWS ground stations around the world. It gives customers on-demand access to these ground stations with no need to lease them upfront, no need to try to build them or buy them.

"Satellite data is incredibly useful for building a wide range of important applications, but it is super complex and expensive to build and operate the infrastructure needed to do so", Charlie Bell, Amazon Web Services senior vice president, said in a statement. We are excited to support Apps Associates as they assist more customers to migrate these mission-critical workloads to AWS, coupled with comprehensive optimization and cloud managed services.

Executive vice president of Lockheed Martin Rick Ambrose said that his company would develop a network of low-priced ground-based antennas that could help deliver the new service. "That also means if you want to take that data and use it, you need infrastructure to store, process and do analytics, which is all hard and expensive". Apart from easier access to data, the service will also help reduce costs by up to 80 per cent.

"With this new system, the image will be crystal clear and this will be crucial for application in autonomous vehicles", Scott said. "In time, with satellites built to take full advantage of the distributed Verge network, AWS and Lockheed Martin expect to see customers develop surprising new capabilities using the service".

Customers and partners now previewing the AWS Ground Station are Lockheed Martin, Digital Globe, HawkEye, Advanced Space, Open Cosmos, Black Sky, Capella Space and others.

Lockheed Martin Verge is now available in private beta for customers with satellites that support S-band frequencies and can downlink in the Denver, Colorado area.
