Instagram now lets you share stories with close friends only”

Instagram has launched a crackdown on fake accounts, introducing a new feature showing users information about who is really behind a username. When it comes time to share to Stories, you'll have the option to share as usual or just with your close friends.

Analysts say it's a smart strategy considering users are already flocking from the main feed to Stories. "You can share things that are maybe a bit less polished, less ideal, [and] daily moments from your life", said Debra Aho Williamson, principal analyst at eMarketer who covers social media marketing. "I think that's valuable".

Instagram Stories have, in the past, been an all-or-nothing affair. The feature, which will be in the latest version of the app, allows you to specify whether you want all your followers to be able to view your Story or only the select few whom you've designated as "close friends".

Instagram Stories are great for quickly sharing what's going on in your life - but sometimes you don't want all your followers to see them. Which means that if you don't see these indicators for a certain friend, that person has not deemed you worthy of Close Friendhood.

Unlike Snapchat's ill-fated "best friends" though, your "close friends" on Instagram are not viewable by anyone else, though you can tell when someone else has made you their best friend. While followers won't be notified if they're added to or removed from your Close Friends list, a badge appears in the Stories of people whose Close Friends lists you're on, so it's not totally secret.

We're able to use Highlights, which is right under the bio on Instagram, to direct people to the story.
