Maine CDC encourages people to get tested on World AIDS Day

Maine CDC encourages people to get tested on World AIDS Day”

The Union government has set sights on reducing new HIV infections by 75% in the country by 2020. Testing is therefore a vital element in preventing further spread of the virus and ensuring that those with HIV have a better quality of life.

At the same time, health minister Aaron Motsoaledi says today the department is launching the "Cheka Impilo" initiative to send the message that people don't have to live with the virus without treatment or help.

She said that in some parts of the region, HIV testing and access to treatment was still lacking and urged leaders to have stronger political will, commitment and increase investment to achieve universal health coverage in all states.

The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) is calling on people to get tested as an important step towards halting the spread of HIV and ending AIDS. Though HIV testing in the United States is readily available and oftentimes free of charge, 1 in 5 people do not know their status due to a lack of access.

- An estimated 77 million people have become infected with HIV since the start of the epidemic in 1981, including 1.8 million in 2017.

"In addition, more than three in five (15.3 million) people are accessing life-saving antiretroviral therapy".

HIV testing provides people with a unique opportunity to discover their HIV status and enables those diagnosed with HIV to rapidly initiate lifesaving treatment.

World AIDS Day is a day to remember the millions of people who have lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses, many of whom died because they couldn't access HIV services, because of stigma, because of discrimination and because of criminalization of key populations.

According to Moeti, HIV testing empowers people to make choices about HIV prevention specifically how to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Many people when asked about if they use protection told Joy News' Joseph Ackah Blay that stopping to put on either ruin the moment or makes sex less enjoyable.

"Even though it is not one hundred percent certain, many youths feel if they use protection when having sex with an infected person, they will not get the virus", she said.

Over the years, we, as advocates and the medical community, have made great strides.
