Nine charged for leaking Samsung's flexible display tech to China”

In a case of industrial espionage, South Korean lawmakers have charged nine individuals and two companies of selling Samsung technology to a company in China. As a result, the company holds about 95% of the markets share for small and mid-sized OLED panels. According to Reuters, the leaks included a sale of documents to China with the relevant information for the equivalent of $13.85 million. Its display-making arm claims it invested over $134 million to fun a 38-strong team of engineers over six years in order to develop the technology. Three people out of the 11 have been arrested by the authorities and are now awaiting the trial process.

One of the main display manufacturing equipment suppliers of Samsung Display is being investigated by the prosecution here for illegally selling the tech giant's OLED display technologies to Chinese firms. They allegedly sold the information for $13.8 million to an unnamed Chinese company, according to the news source. This curved OLED edge panel technology is now found on the Galaxy Note 9, and it is bound to come to the Galaxy S10 models early next year. Samsung makes its own displays, while Huawei is sourcing them from Chinese manufacturer BOE. The company's CEO is one of the three people that have been arrested. The mainland is pouring billions into becoming self-sustaining in areas such as memory chips and displays, two fields where Samsung is the world leader. Curved-edge OLED screens have become a signature feature of the Suwon-based company's high-end Galaxy smartphones, including Note 9.

Toptec's offices were raided by prosecutors in the Far Eastern country in mid-September as part of an incestigation that led to today's indictments. "Our company will fully cooperate with legal proceedings to find the truth in court." said Toptec which is the company that is accused of stealing the secrets.
