Amazon tests checkout-free shopping for larger stores”

While Amazon is aware of these difficulties, it has been tweaking the cashierless technology at its current Amazon Go locations to improve customer experiences.

According to sources who spoke to the news outlet, Amazon is testing its technology at a space in Seattle, which has been arranged like a large store.

While Amazon Go is more of a convenience store, with limited groceries and prepared foods, the intention is to apply the technology to Whole Foods, according to WSJ's sources. There are no checkouts or cashiers - instead, an app on your phone registers as you enter the store, and cameras on the shelves detect the items you take and add them to a virtual basket.

Even though this seamless concept works great in smaller Amazon Go stores, a source told The Wall Street Journal that rolling out the same technology in a bigger store could be challenging due to higher ceilings and product inventory.

Those familiar with the matter also speculated that the most likely application for the larger-scale cashierless tech would be in Whole Foods, which Amazon acquired in 2017. That could carry implications for Whole Foods workers, who have already complained that after Amazon's acquisition of the grocery store they were expected to act like "robots".

Amazon has moved deeper into physical retail over the past few years after more than two decades shaping how people shop online.

Inside of Amazon's Go stores, products are systematically placed on shelves full of indicators that are easily recognized by computer vision systems. A Chicago store opened in September, and the company reportedly found a Lower Manhattan location for its NY store. How would it handle the varying qualities of fresh produce, or track frozen foods hidden behind glass?
