Brother of Australian cricket star arrested, questioned over 'terror hit list'”

The brother of Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja has been arrested over a forged terror hit list found at the University of NSW earlier this year.

SBS reported that New South Wales Police arrested the man at Parramatta, Western Sydney this morning.

"The man was taken to Parramatta Police Area Command where he was spoken in to regarding the alleged offences of attempt to pervert justice, and forgery - making a false document".

Its contents led to the wrongful arrest and imprisonment in August of Mohamed Nizamdeen, a 25-year-old PhD student and colleague of Mr Khawaja's at the Sydney university campus where he works.

Nizamdeen was later on released after a week's investigation by the police, in which it was found that the writing in the notebook did not matches his own.

The arrest comes as Usman Khawaja prepares with the Australia squad in Adelaide ahead of Thursday's first Test against India, the start of a crucial four-match series in which the home side could challenge India's position as the world's top-ranked Test team.

Willing confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.

On Tuesday, police alleged Mr Nizamdeen had been "set up in a planned and calculated manner" by Mr Khawaja.

Willing added that police believe Khawaja orchestrated the set up and may have been motivated by a dispute over a woman.

According to the Herald, Mr Nizamdeen is now suing police over his arrest, claiming the authorities were "immature" and "unprofessional" in the way they treated him.

"We regret the circumstances which led to him being charged and the time he subsequently spent in custody".

"This is a matter for the police to deal with", Khawaja said, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

Speaking in a press conference on Tuesday, police were hit with a stream of questions from reporters but refused to divulge many details of the case (including Arsalan Khawaja's name) - instead stating all details will be referred to court.

"Out of respect for the process, it would be inappropriate for me to make any further comments".
