Inaugural women's Ballon D'Or victor asked to 'twerk' on stage

Inaugural women's Ballon D'Or victor asked to 'twerk' on stage”

23-year old Ada Hegerberg made history by becoming the first ever female Ballon d'Or victor but her special moment was somewhat overshadowed by host Martin Solveig asking her about twerking after she collected her award.

With her win signalling a breakthrough in the widespread acknowledgement of women's football, her moment in the spotlight was ever so slightly compromised by the inappropriate comments of French DJ, Martin Solveig.

The Norwegian worldwide scooped the coveted prize at the ceremony in Paris following a stunning 42-goal season, including 15 in the Champions League for club Lyon as they won the competition for the third consecutive year. I didn't really think about it at the time to be honest. "Most importantly congratulations to Ada".

However, the historic moment was immediately tarnished after her acceptance speech by the host, who asked the athlete if she could twerk onstage.

"It's all about how we respect women's football", she said.

Solveig later posted a picture on Twitter of him and Hegerberg shaking hands, saying "she understood it was a joke".

Norwegian striker Ada Hegerberg has won three Champions League medals in-a-row with Lyon, and tonight scooped the Ballon d'Or at a star-studded ceremony in Paris.

She has said that she won't play for Norway at next year's Women's World Cup.

Pernille Harder (Denmark/Wolfsburg), Dzsenifer Maroszan (Germany/Lyon), Marta (Brazil/Orlando Pride) and Sam Kerr (Australia/Chicago Red Stars) filled out the top five.

"It's all about how we respect women's football".

It recognises her as the best female footballer in the world. However, she also expressed frustration about living "in such a man's world" and said the award will not make her reconsider her refusal to play for Norway because of her unhappiness over perceived inequality.

I wish the national team the best, though.

Croatia and Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric was named the best men's player of 2018 at the prestigious awards organised by France Football magazine.
