David Attenborough warns civilisations will COLLAPSE if climate change not addressed

David Attenborough warns civilisations will COLLAPSE if climate change not addressed”

The two-week 24th conference of the parties to the UN Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) technically started on Sunday, but Monday saw the high-level grand opening that also emphasised implementation of guidelines to build trust among nations.

The world is "way off course" in its plan to prevent catastrophic climate change, the United Nations warned Monday as nations gathered in Poland to chart a way for mankind to avert runaway global warming.

Over the weekend, 19 G20 member states reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris climate accord - except for the USA, which pulled out of the landmark agreement past year.

The presidents of at-risk states such as Fiji, Nigeria and Nepal are expected at COP24 talks, which aim to flesh out the promises agreed in the 2015 Paris climate accord.

Patti Lynn, executive director of the Corporate Accountability campaign group, called for nations to agree to the global greenhouse gas draw-down upon which the fate of the Paris agreement now rests.

Collected using the #TakeYourSeat hashtag, millions of people from around the world were invited to share their stories about climate change and the impact it has had on them, their families, their health, and their communities.

Referring to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) special report, released in October 2018, on the impacts of the global warming of 1.5°C, Mr. Endalew said, the IPCC report made it crystal clear that every bit of warming mattered, especially for the LDCs.

The opening ceremony could not have been more dramatic as Attenborough warned that climate change is a man-made disaster on a global scale.

Severely reducing emissions is the only way reach the 1.5-degree goal, experts say, but it will be an expensive feat.

He said the world is facing its "greatest threat in thousands of years: climate change". "They want you, the decision-makers, to act now", Attenborough said.

Fiji's prime minister, Frank Bainimarama, who presided over last year's United Nations climate summit, said the "just transition" proposal shouldn't just consider the fate of fossil fuel workers but all people around the world whose lives are affected by climate change.

Most notably, American president Donald Trump has shown a complete disregard of any sustainable climate goals, announcing his intention to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, and implementing policies that favor the fossil fuel industry at the expense of greener tech. Scientists say the deal's most ambitious goal - limiting the rise to 1.5 degrees C (2.7 C) - is still feasible, but increasingly challenging.

COP24, the UN's annual climate summit, kicked off in Katowice, Poland.

But Polish President Andrzej Duda later told a news conference the coal-rich country would reduce its reliance on coal but would never entirely give up its "strategic fossil fuel".

To maximize the chances of success, technical talks began on Sunday, a day earlier than planned, with delegates from almost 200 nations haggling over how to implement the broad promises of the Paris deal on moving away from fossil fuel.

Secretary Emmanuel de Guzman, vice chair of the Climate Change Commission, said the Philippine delegation would remain "constant and persistent" in its call for scaled-up, adequate and predictable financial support of developed countries to developing nations.
