Mueller to Detail Ex-NSA Flynn's Cooperation in Russia Probe

Mueller to Detail Ex-NSA Flynn's Cooperation in Russia Probe”

Special counsel Robert Mueller has filed a highly-anticipated sentencing memo for Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, the president's former national security adviser, as part of his ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. It was filed two weeks ahead of Flynn's sentencing and just over a year after he pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about conversations with the Russian ambassador on Trump's behalf. According to the addendum, Flynn has assisted with two other matters - at least one of them a criminal investigation - besides Mueller's Russian Federation probe, but those other matters are redacted. He did all this without first obtaining a traditional, ironclad deal under which the government would commit to seeking leniency on Cohen's behalf when he is sentenced on December 12.

Trump said previous year that Flynn was a "fine man", but he had to dismiss his national security adviser 21 days into the new administration because he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with Russia's ambassador in Washington during the transition. Flynn could have faced 5 years in prison, but with the plea agreement it appeared the retired lieutenant general may serve zero to six months in prison.

The filing goes on to say that Flynn assisted on another front in the Russian Federation probe, but that that section is redacted.

Mr Flynn had been a fervent supporter of Mr Trump during the election campaign.

He has instead spent considerable time with his family and worked to position himself for a post-conviction career.

He was forced out over revelations that he had discussed lifting U.S. sanctions on Russia with the Russian ambassador to Washington before Mr Trump took office, and that he lied to the United States vice-president about that conversation. Flynn was sacked from the White House on February 13, 2017, after he misled Trump administration officials, including Vice President Pence, on his communications.

Flynn's sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 18, and prosecutors are due to submit a sentencing memo for him on Tuesday.

Flynn ― who joined in chants of "lock her up" against Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during the 2016 Republican National Convention ― admitted that he made a false statement to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on January 24, 2017.

Flynn was forced to resign his post on February 13, 2017, after news reports revealed that Obama administration officials had warned the Trump White House about Flynn's false statements.

The White House has said that Flynn misled officials- including Vice President Mike Pence - about the content of his conversations.

Manafort pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction in September and struck a plea deal with prosecutors to answer any and all questions they had about the Russian Federation investigation and any other federal criminal inquiries.
