Soyuz MS-11 Blasts Off to ISS From Baikonur Cosmodrome

Soyuz MS-11 Blasts Off to ISS From Baikonur Cosmodrome”

Saint-Jacques, 48, has spent years training for the six-month mission, which was originally scheduled for December 20 but was moved up after the aborted Soyuz launch.

Canadian Space Agency president Sylvain Laporte told the crew members there was "a lot of relief" when the astronauts entered the space station about two hours after docking.

The Soyuz was "successfully launched into orbit", Roscosmos wrote on Twitter.

Cosmonaut of Roscosmos Oleg Kononenko, astronauts of NASA and the Canadian space agency Ann McClain and David Saint-Jacques will head to the ISS.

That's when a rocket failure forced the Soyuz capsule carrying two astronauts to make an emergency landing.

This is the first launch of manned spacecraft after the accident the carrier rocket "Soyuz-FG" with manned spacecraft "Soyuz MS-10", which was wrecked soon after launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome on October 11.

Russia's state space corporation, Roscosmos, traced the failure to a damaged sensor and found that two other Soyuz rockets might have the same defect.

Kononenko, McClain and Saint-Jacques showed no signs of worry as they boarded a bus yesterday to take them to the launch.

Speaking before the trip on Sunday, crew commander Oleg Kononenko affirmed his crew "absolutely" trusted the flight's preparation.

"Risk is part of our profession", he stated. "We are psychologically and technically prepared for blast-off and any situation which, may occur on board".

At the time of the launch, the ISS was flying about 250 miles over central Kazakhstan southwest of the capital of Astana, 405 miles ahead of the Soyuz as it leaves the launch pad.

But the rocket launch on Monday went smoothly.

"Looking forward to having a full crew of six up here again, at least for a few weeks".

This was the first time people rode on one of the Russian rockets since October 11, when two and a half minutes after takeoff, one of the Soyuz MS-10's four boosters broke off, sending the aircraft spinning out of control.

Kononenko is beginning his fourth mission to add to an impressive 533 days in space. CBC News Network will also broadcast the interactive special featuring Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.

McClain, 39, served in Iraq and has represented the United States in women's rugby. She has said that training to spacewalk was similar to rugby since it demands "grit, toughness, mental focus, and more".

The crew was reporting that all was going well in the critical initial minutes after liftoff and were safely in orbit.

But comments by the combative chief of the Russian space agency, Dmitry Rogozin, have raised eyebrows.
