US gives Russia 60 days to comply with nuclear treaty”

"In light of these facts, today, America will announce it finds Russian Federation in violation of the treaty and we will remove ourselves from the treaty in 60 days unless Russian Federation returns to compliance", he said.

NATO foreign ministers, who met in Brussels, issued a statement condemning Russian Federation for developing and fielding a missile system, a violation of the INF Treaty of 1987.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced at NATO Headquarters Tuesday that the US will suspend its obligations under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty in 60 days because of Russia's continued violations of the treaty, shortly after NATO's foreign ministers affirmed its support for that conclusion in a new joint statement.

Amid heightened tensions between Moscow and the West, U.S. President Donald Trump in October vowed to abandon the treaty, saying Russian Federation had been violating it with a new missile system.

The US President wants out of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty which he believes has been regularly broken by the Kremlin and also rendered irrelevant by China's nuclear weapons programme.

The United States warned Russian Federation on Tuesday that it would withdraw from the Cold War-era treaty limiting mid-range nuclear arms if Moscow does not return to compliance within 60 days.

"We need to create a coordinated response to the actions of Russia", Klimkin said, adding that he raised "a set of practical steps with a number of proposals" at the meeting as to how NATO, Ukraine and Georgia might do that together.

The nuclear-capable Russian cruise missiles are mobile and hard to detect and can hit cities in Europe with little or no warning, according to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, dramatically changing the security calculus on the continent.

The US Secretary of State told foreign ministers: "Its range makes it a direct menace to Europe".

But on Monday, the USA leader said he wants talks with his Chinese and Russian counterparts Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin "to head off a major and uncontrollable Arms Race".

The treaty was negotiated by then president Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, and eliminated the medium-range missile arsenals of both superpowers, reducing their ability to launch a military strike at short notice.

He has signalled that Washington will be forced to restore the military balance in Europe after that period but declined to give more details, saying only that tests and deployments of new missiles were on hold until then.

The prospect of USA missiles on European soil is a concern for states including Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, whose representatives have urged Mr Pompeo to continue with diplomacy in fear of a European arms race.
