Yankees Turn To J.A. Happ And Nathan Eovaldi Following Corbin Miss

Yankees Turn To J.A. Happ And Nathan Eovaldi Following Corbin Miss”

It might not be long before we have our first major free-agent signing of the 2018-2019 MLB offseason.

In Corbin, the Nationals added arguably the most sought-after free-agent starting pitcher on the market this offseason.

Though the Yankees reportedly were unwilling to go beyond five years for Corbin, they're still looking for some pitching help and are now going to focus on Nathan Eovaldi and JA Happ, according to MLB Network's Jon Morosi.

The big victor of the Patrick Corbin sweepstakes is the Washington Nationals.

However, this is the first report that seems to signal Philadelphia may be in front of the listed teams in regards to the chances of signing the two-time All-Star, as well as news that they aren't afraid to outspend any other potential suitor.

Corbin is coming off one of his strongest seasons as a professional, which came at a flawless time considering it was a contract year. The Phillies telling Corbin they won't be out-bid isn't surprising, especially after owner John Middleton's remarks to Nightengale in which he said they expect to be a "little stupid" about how they spend their money. As is often the case, far too much was made of his hometown (Clay, New York) and the fact he grew up a Yankees fan in a family full of Yankees fans.

Throughout the 2018 regular season, Corbin put together an 11-7 win-loss record through 200.0 innings pitched in 33 starts. Clearly, they're not ready to cede control of the NL East to the aggressive Mets and Phillies or the surging Braves. He went 2-1 with two holds and a 1.61 ERA over 22.1 innings in the playoffs. He also set a career high with 246 strikeouts, good for third in the National League. He was an All-Star with a 3.41 ERA in 208.1 innings in 2013.

The left-handed Corbin, who left the Arizona Diamondbacks, joins a Nationals starting rotation that already includes three-time Cy Young Award victor Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg.
