Huawei's woes add up as BT pulls equipment

Huawei's woes add up as BT pulls equipment”

Huawei is the world's largest supplier of telecommunications network equipment and second-biggest maker of smartphones.

But UK carrier EE used Huawei gear in the core network of its 3G and 4G networks before it was acquired by BT for £12.5 billion ($15.9 billion or AU$21.9 billion) in 2016.

"In 2016, following the acquisition of EE, we began a process to remove Huawei equipment from the core of our 3G and 4G networks, as part of network architecture principles in place since 2006", a BT spokesperson said.

The move by BT will bring its mobile phone business in line with an internal policy to keep the Chinese company's equipment at the edge of telecoms infrastructure.

The decoupling of China's telecoms giant Huawei from the wireless networks of English-speaking countries continued this week, as the UK's largest mobile provider chose to ban the use of the Chinese firm's equipment in its mobile operations.

"We're applying these same principles to our current RFP for 5G core infrastructure". Australia earlier this year, and New Zealand more recently, have rejected Huawei's bid to suply 5G network infrastructure hardware, stating national security as the main reason.

Huawei agreed that the decision is "a normal and expected activity, which we understand and fully support", despite EE extending its 5G partnership with Huawei to cover live trials of 5G New Radio (NR) and customer premises equipment (CPE) back in February.

It also follows a warning from the head of Britain's MI6 foreign intelligence service about the potential threat Huawei poses to national and corporate security.

Huawei will no longer be at the "control plane" of BT's network, instead restricted to the "periphery", as the United Kingdom telecoms company continues to utilise its masts and antennas.

Concerns about Chinese involvement in sensitive areas such as telecoms began to grow after a recent report to US congress by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission suggested the Chinese government "exerts strong influence over its firms".

It is believed that USA operators will not be buying 5G equipment from Huawei.

It follows reports that the U.S. is trying to persuade foreign allies' wireless and internet providers to avoid the Chinese company's equipment, citing cybersecurity risks.
