The Dons have played Rangers twice since Steven Gerrard took over at Ibrox, following up a 1-1 draw on the opening day of the season with a 1-0 victory in the semi-final of the Betfred Cup.

Kilmarnock have climbed to the top of the Scottish Premiership after Glasgow rivals Rangers and Celtic stumbled on Wednesday night.

In truth, Rangers were labouring long before the Colombian was shown a second yellow card for a stray arm on Dons defender Graeme Shinnie, but any hope they had of forcing their way back into the match, against an opponent who also had a man sent off in the first half, went when the forward left the field.

At just the half way point of Steven Gerrard's maiden campaign in charge, it seems that the side have a lack of discipline.

But Gerrard had more than just his side's latest red card to be frustrated about. I've made it very clear they are not helping themselves.

"The performance as a group wasn't good enough to beat Aberdeen, even at 11 v 10 the performance wasn't good enough".

'It's very hard for me to back them and protect them because, 24 hours after a team meeting about controlling discipline, it's very tough for me to talk right now'. "We want to get that right but at times we have got it wrong".

Gary Mackay-Steven will miss tonight's match after suffering concussion following a collision with Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata at Hampden but Docherty believes 19-year-old winger Connor McLennan can prove an able deputy for the Scotland worldwide.

'The first yellow for me is a little bit soft but it was probably a foul, ' said Gerrard. "The second one he deserves".

"We had to pick ourselves off the floor after Sunday but I was pleased with a lot of the aspects of the game", said boss Derek McInnes.

"There is only so much I can do".

"I think we deserved it and put pressure on them towards the end".

Their fans are certainly not impressed with the attacker, with many of them acknowledging on social media that he is something of a liability when he is getting sent off so often.

"But our last three games against them have been good".
