Found a way to diagnose cancer in ten minutes

Found a way to diagnose cancer in ten minutes”

A researcher at the University of Queensland, Laura Carrascosa, said a major advantage of this technique was that it was very cheap and extremely simple to do.

The test has a sensitivity of about 90%, and this means that it would be able to detect about 90 cases of cancer from 100.

Now doctors use symptoms and a raft of tests and biopsies to determine if cancer is present which can sometimes take months. The researchers found the signature in multiple types of breast cancer as well as in prostate and colorectal cancer, and lymphoma.

The researchers, from the University of Queensland, discovered a unique signature in cancer DNA that, when put in a specific solution, separates from other bodily fluids and is easily observed.

And so, Sina and colleagues compared the epigenetic patterns on the genomes of cancer cells to those of healthy cells, specifically focusing on patterns of methyl groups. They are instructions that control the expressions of the genes. In cancer cells, however, this particular pattern is being hijacked, and only the genes that help cancer grows are switched on. While the DNA inside normal cells has methyl groups dotted all over it, the DNA inside cancer cells is largely bare, with methyl groups found only in small clusters at different locations. He further added that this discovery has led the researchers to develop a portable and affordable detection device that could be used as a cancer detecting tool, also possibly with a mobile phone. "We find that DNA polymeric behavior is strongly affected by differential patterning of methylcytosine, leading to fundamental differences in DNA solvation and DNA-gold affinity between cancerous and normal genomes".

Such a test has been devised by researchers from the University of Queensland's Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN).

The difference? Cancer DNA has a rather strong affinity for gold, according to a new study.

Gold nanoparticles produced by laser ablation in heavy water. If DNA from cancer cells is then added, it sticks to the nanoparticles in such a way that the water retains its original colour.

DNA of healthy and cancerous cells in different ways attached to the metal base.

So far they've tested the new technology on 200 samples across different types of human cancers, and healthy cells.

The researcher added that "it looks really interesting as an incredibly simple universal marker of cancer". It could be useful, however, if clinicians might not ever see a patient again in a rural area and need rapid results.
