Google's chat plans: Kill Allo, upgrade Duo and invest in Messages

Google's chat plans: Kill Allo, upgrade Duo and invest in Messages”

However, the company has confirmed the chat app will continue to work till March 2019 and the users will be able to export their chat conversation history till the said time-frame.

Allo development, as slow as it was, has been on hold since Google announced they were re-focusing their messaging efforts on the Rich Communications Services (RCS) powered "Chat" platform in their Android Messages app back in April.

Hangouts, which is the consumer messaging app you may have adopted years ago and is attached to your Google account, is going to die at some point down the road. The company says that it will keep Allo working till March 2019, after which it will no longer be available. In a way, this should provide some clarity on the current state of Google's messaging app ecosystem and which apps you'll want to pay the most attention to. At its height, the app had the attention of less than 50 million users. All users will be moved to the Slack-like Hangouts Chat and video conferencing app Hangouts Meet-it did the same thing with G Suite users-but there's no word on when this will happen.

Additionally, Google will also be replacing the classic version of Hangouts.

While Google does plan to shut down Hangouts eventually, Johnston said that Google was also opening up two of its enterprise-only messaging apps- Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet-to its consumer user base, and users of Hangouts would be transitioned to these two apps.

Google has found itself with an overwhelming number of messaging options as it seems to throw stuff at the wall, see what sticks and call it spaghetti. Until that happens, Google is apparently "fully committed to supporting Hangouts users in the meantime".

Today's announcement does a certain amount to change all that, but still leaves Messaging, Duo and Hangouts doing more or less the same job in a different way.
