'Medical milestone' as first baby born from womb of dead donor

'Medical milestone' as first baby born from womb of dead donor”

For the first time, a woman has given birth after receiving a uterus transplant from a deceased donor, researchers reported Tuesday.

The 32-year-old patient suffered from a rare genetic disorder called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH), which caused her uterus not to develop.

The transplant womb was taken from a mother-of-three who had died from bleeding on the brain.

The girl was healthy weighing almost six pounds and was delivered via cesarean section.

While researchers in countries including Sweden and the USA have previously succeeded in transplanting wombs from living donors into women who have gone on to give birth, experts said the latest development was a significant advance. Until now, the only successful uterus transplants have involved living donors who are typically family members of the recipients.

The world's first baby has been born via a uterus transplanted from a dead donor.

Previously, there have been 10 other uterus transplants from dead donors attempted in the United States, Czech Republic and Turkey, but this is the first to result in a live birth.

Five months after the transplant, Ejzenberg's team wrote, the uterus showed no signs of rejection, ultrasound scans were normal, and the recipient was having regular menstruation.

She was given five immuno-suppressant drugs -which she took throughout her pregnancy - antibiotics and anti-blood clotting treatment.

Uterus transplantation is a relatively new area of medicine.

The first baby born from a transplanted uterus arrived in Sweden in 2014.

The uterus transplant, in this case, happened in September 2016.

Professor Lois Salamonsen, research group head of endometrial remodelling and Adjunct Professor at Monash University's Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology said she had received a few calls form Australian women over the years asking why uterine transplantation wasn't done in Australia.

No. In order to keep the uterus after birth, the mother would have to continue taking immune system suppression medications which can pose risks.

According to data included in the new report, among infertile couples, one in 500 have uterine infertility due to factors such as birth defects, hysterectomy or infection.

Since live uterus donors are a limitation, the report shows that uterus transplants from deceased donors are feasible and may open access for all women with uterine problems, without the need for live donors, as is the practice now.

"The number of people willing and committed to donate organs upon their own deaths are far larger than those of live donors, offering a much wider potential donor population". After seven months, the fertilised eggs were implanted.

"There are still lots of things we don't understand about pregnancies, like how embryos implant", said Dr. Cesar Diaz told USA Today.

Researchers point out that the latest landmark birth may create more options for women in the future, since live donors can be hard to find.

Later the doctors fertilised her eggs with the father-to-be's sperm and freezed them. At the age of 7 months and 20 days, the baby continued to breastfeed and weighed 15 pounds, 14 ounces.
