Microsoft Confirms It Will Adopt Chromium for Microsoft Edge”

That's an inarguable truth as Chromium, which powers the Chrome browser and Chrome OS, has grown to be a whole platform, as the browser and Chromebooks have sat at the front of the pack. This is supposed to allow the company to "create better web compatibility for our customers" and lead to "less fragmentation of the web for all web developers".

Microsoft confirmed earlier rumors that it will be rebuilding Edge on the Chromium platform.

Microsoft has given Edge numerous advantages in the war on retention.

Codenamed 'Anaheim, ' this new browser for Windows 10 will replace Edge as the default browser on the platform.

Microsoft explains that they plan on switching Edge to a Chromium-based engine in order to provide better web site compatibility, a standardized platform for building and testing web sites, and better app compatibility for the enterprise.

A preview build of the new Chromium-powered Edge browser will arrive early next year.

It's become a cliche to note that people often launch Edge for the first and last time so they can install a different browser.

Now Microsoft will be able to deliver updates as they're introduced to Chromium, ensuring Edge is as compatible with web standards as any other Chromium-based browser, and likely enabling Chromium extensions down the road. There's a reason Microsoft didn't opt to go with UWP, and it's because Microsoft is prioritizing bringing Edge to other platforms over making it exclusive to Windows 10.

Microsoft is planning to create a new version of Edge by using Chromium combined with some components now in Edge, all in the name of providing greater browsing compatibility across the web. We'll share more details as Microsoft releases them.

Now that this transition has begun, Belfiore also said that Microsoft intends to become a major contributor to the Chromium open source project, and do work that will make all existing Chromium-based browsers run better on Windows 10. However, we believe that everything that makes Edge unique, such as its focus on inking, providing an excellent reading and PDF experience, will still be there in the new Edge. Bringing it to Windows 7 essentially puts it on the other 50 percent, making it available to about 500 million more users. And, of course it will save Microsoft resources.

Will Microsoft's decision make it harder for Firefox to prosper? It will be an alternative to what the tech giant Microsoft's Windows 10 S now offers but without any additional service component. Microsoft is keen to stress that there is nothing to worry about for Edge users - Edge is not changing any time soon, and nor it is going anywhere. The company was trying to constantly update its rendering engine while also trying to add new features to the browser; resources were spread thin.
