NASA Recorded the Sounds of Mars (And It's Almost All Creepy Bass)

NASA Recorded the Sounds of Mars (And It's Almost All Creepy Bass)”

The vibrations caused by the winds were recorded by a seismometer, installed on the InSight lander, on December 1 as the winds were blowing across its solar panels from northwest to southeast, according to NASA.

The noise was produced due to the air blowing over the solar panels of the InSight lander as well as the motion of the spacecraft.

"Humans are multisensor people, and now we have two of our sensors turned on with this mission", with both audio and visual data streaming back to Earth, Don Banfield, the science lead for the air pressure sensor, said during the news conference.

So, the spacecraft recorded vibrations of the wind speed which ranged from 16 to 24 kilometers per hour.

A second version of the audio was also released with the audio pitched slightly higher, where the sound is more perceivable to the human ear.

With a reach of almost 6 feet (2 metres), the arm will be used to pick up science instruments from the lander's deck, gently setting them on the Martian surface at Elysium Planitia, the lava plain where InSight touched down on November 26. It's like InSight is cupping its ears and hearing the Mars wind beating on it.

The air pressure sensor inside the shield will be relocated as well, and the team will gather data at night, when it expects the wind will have died down and the lander itself will be making less noise.

NASA released the spacecraft InSight, which depicted his robotic arm with a length of nearly two meters.

An annotated image of the surface of Mars. In a few weeks, InSight's arm will set the measuring device on the surface of Mars. We can also see a relatively smooth bit of Mars landscape near the lander.

Earlier it was reported that the InSight probe made a successful landing on Mars at the end of November 2019. However, the unaltered audio sample from the seismometer is also available. In just a couple years, the British-built Mars 2020 rover is scheduled to land with two actual microphones on board.

You can hear more of the sounds here and listen to NASA's news telecon with a panel of scientists here.
