Bright fireball lights up Texas night sky

Bright fireball lights up Texas night sky”

But you don't need to look in the direction of the constellation, because the meteors will appear all across the sky.

At 5 p.m. MT on Saturday, the Earth will pass through the thickest part of the Leonid meteors.

Leonid meteors tend to be few and far between at early evening, but intensify in number as evening deepens into late night.

The Leonid meteor shower originates from debris from comet Temple-Tuttle, which travels through our solar system every 33 years.

The Leonid meteor shower 2018, which is already underway, will reportedly reach its peak on Saturday, November 17.

The Leonids are known for being prolific, bright meteor storms with up to 100,000 meteors that whiz through the sky at every hour.

This meteor shower got its name from the Leo the Lion star constellation, from which the dust particles disperse and radiate.

Dr Mason said a much more spectacular display is due over the United Kingdom with the Geminids meteor shower due on December 13. Beforehand, check out TimeandDate.com to see when the Leonids will be visible in your area. Fireballs are brighter and larger and can last longer than the average meteor, while earthgrazers appear close to the horizon with long, colorful tails.

The moon might interfere with viewing while it's out, she said, but you'll still be able to see meteors. This is not a particularly active year but still, there could be around 15 meteors an hour and the peak is the 17th and 18th November. And with this weekend's moon shining at a almost full waxing gibbous phase, it's better to look out for the Leonids with no moon in the sky at all.

A video of the event captured by a dashboard camera shows an unidentified object flying at high velocity across the sky with a green glare in its wake before disappearing into the abyss.

The best time to see the meteor showers will be between midnight and dawn on both mornings, wherever you are in the world.
