Poacher ordered to repeatedly watch ’Bambi’ after killing hundreds of deer

Poacher ordered to repeatedly watch ’Bambi’ after killing hundreds of deer”

A hunter charged with illegally taking wildlife in Missouri has been ordered to watch the iconic 1942 Disney classic, Bambi, at least monthly until the end of his year-long prison sentence, local paper The Springfield News-Leader reports.

Official court records from the December 6 hearing say that Berry, of Springfield, Missouri, 'is to view the Walt Disney movie Bambi, with the first viewing being on or before December 23, 2018, and at least one such viewing each month thereafter, during defendant's incarceration in the Lawrence County Jail'.

His sentencing finalized one of the state's largest-ever poaching investigations, according to the release.

Berry and his father - also called David - have had their hunting, fishing and trapping privileges revoked for life by the Missouri Conservation Commission.

Authorities have no idea how many deer the Berry family and their associates illegally killed in the fields and forests of southern Missouri over the last decade, but the details of their poaching operation would make any animal lover's stomach turn.

"It is unknown how many deer the main group of suspects has taken illegally over the past several years", said Lawrence County Conservation Agent Andy Barnes.

Berry was arrested in August this year, along with two other family members for killing the deer and hacking their heads from their bodies.

The targeted deer were trophy bucks, Trotter explained, and the hunters killed them "mostly at night, for their heads, leaving the bodies of the deer to waste". Berry Jr. was sentenced to one year behind bars, as well as a concurrent 120 days for a felony firearms probation violation.

However, given the number of deer that were killed, George tacked on an additional punishment to Berry Jr.'s time in prison.

Randy Dorman from the Missouri Department of Conservation condemned the men's 'greed and ego'.

After an eight-and-a-half-month investigation, starting in 2015, into incidents in far-flung places like Kansas, Nebraska and Canada, Berry's dad, David Sr. A fifth man Jerimiah Cline, who helped the Berrys, won't be allowed to hunt for five years.

The other men involved in the illegal slaughtering of hundreds of deer were offered different punishments with a lot of them getting their hunting privileges revoked for up to eighteen years along with some pretty hefty fines.
