USA government partially shutdown Saturday ahead of Christmas holiday

USA government partially shutdown Saturday ahead of Christmas holiday”

The Washington brinkmanship that led to a partial USA government shutdown could have major political repercussions for President Donald Trump and Congress.

The House on Thursday passed a measure extending through February 8 funding for agencies that do not yet have full-year appropriations for the current fiscal year, in the process adding more than $5 billion for border wall construction at the insistence of President Trump.

Nine of 15 Cabinet-level departments and dozens of agencies would face a lapse in funding, including the departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, Interior, Agriculture and State and Justice, as well as national parks and forests.

With a partial government shutdown looming at midnight Friday, employees in federal offices within the Four Corners are unsure what could happen if the U.S. Congress fails to fund the government.

"This is our only chance that we'll ever have, in our opinion, because of the world and the way it breaks out, to get great border security", Trump said Friday at the White House.

McConnell, who met with President Trump Friday at the White House, said in a Senate speech that "this legislation would be quite uncontroversial in a more normal political moment".

Slotkin worked in the federal government for both the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, and remembers some federal employees not being able to pay their bills because they were not receiving paychecks. The Senate passed legislation ensuring that workers will receive back pay. President Trump had insisted he would not sign any spending bill that did not include $5 billion for the border wall. "You're not getting the wall today, next week or on January 3rd, when Democrats take control of the House".

Shelby said the two sides had exchanged counter-offers over the past days and that Pence was arriving with a new one from the White House. "If you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall", Schumer said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell urges Senate to approve wall funding

Roughly 800,000 federal employees are affected through the holidays while the federal government works out a short-term spending plan.

The impasse was over funding for a wall along the southern US border - Trump won't budge without it, but no Democrat will vote for it.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY met with Pence on Saturday at the request of the White House, according to Schumer's office.

The failure to agree on a budget resulted in the closure of a quarter of USA government departments on Friday with hundreds of employees placed on temporary leave.

"Regrettably, America has now entered a Trump Shutdown". Social Security has its own funding source and will issue its usual checks.

Now the most likely prospect for getting a raise enacted would be for the new Congress-under Democratic control in the House-to approve a raise, nearly certainly 1.9 percent, and have it apply retroactively.

Passports and getting tax information from the IRS are two items that can not be done as the State Department and IRS services are impacted by a partial shutdown.

ONLY CERTAIN AGENCIES WILL CLOSE Congress has already funded 75 percent of the government through September 2019 - which means that many major departments like Defense, Veterans Affairs, Energy and Education will remain open and fully functioning. Meanwhile, customs and Border Patrol agents guarding the Ambassador Bridge will continue working over the holiday without pay.
