Amazon: Alexa 'Error' Granted Man Access to Another User's Voice Recordings”

The customer realized this when he requested access to past recordings of his own activities, and when Amazon, the parent company of the device, sent him the link, he also found recordings of another's customer's conversation-precisely 1,700 audio files worth, Reuters reported from Frankfurt. Amazon sent him a download link to tracked searches on the website - and 1,700 audio recordings by Alexa that were generated by another person.

An Amazon spokesman said "This unfortunate case was the result of a human error and an isolated single case". "As a precautionary measure we contacted the relevant authorities".

The person who received the stranger's recordings claimed he initially got no reply from Amazon when the user informed the company that he was given the wrong files. An individual in Germany requested copies of all of his data on Amazon's files as part of the EU General Data Protection Regulation.

As Amazon.de not responded to a demand of the customers, first of all, put this data to the Tech magazine.

Steve Kuncewicz, a partner at law firm BLM said that it was "quite embarrassing" for Amazon but the fact that it only involved the data of one person meant the regulator might "take a pragmatic approach". Further, the victim indicated that Amazon had not contacted him to disclose the leak of his personal information. The recordings apparently consisted of conversations between a man and woman. It also said that some of the recordings were from when he was in the shower.

It was just this past May that Amazon had to explain itself after Alexa recorded a family's private chats on their Echo speaker, and then accidentally sent them to a third party.

CT created a profile of the user and was able to identify the customer, his girlfriend, and some friends, using it. CT contacted the customer and he confirmed that his voice was on the recordings.

The incident in Germany follows a widely covered Alexa privacy mishap that occurred much closer to Amazon's home.

Amazon shipped 6.3 million Echo devices - Alexa-enabled smart speakers - worldwide in the third quarter of 2018, it recently said.

Twitter users are reacting to this latest data breach with outrage and shock.
