What did you think of the temporary Instagram change?”

Instagram, the social app owned and operated by Facebook and used by more than a billion people the world over, made a decision to run a small "test" of a new format - one that shifts the app's well-known infinite scroll of posts and images to a swipe experience similar to that found within its popular Stories feature.

"Due to a bug, some users saw a change to the way their feed appears today", Instagram wrote on Twitter this afternoon.

'That was supposed to be a very small test that went broad by accident, ' Mosseri tweeted not long after the backlash became apparent.

But everyone can relax.

This is definitely not the first time an Instagram update has led to users having a meltdown.

All of the trends that we've seen suggest that in the not-too-distant future, people will be sharing more into Stories than they will into feeds.

If you're still seeing the update, Mosseri suggests closing out and launching the app again. "We apologise for the confusion", reads the tweet. Millions of users of the social network received an update today that implemented this system, much to the umbrage of the vocal majority. Stop this chaos and bring back the chronological news feed.

News of the Instagram update actually surfaced back in October, according to TechCrunch.

Minutes after the update went through on many phones, some noted that their app reverted back to infinite scroll and the update appeared to have been removed.

Some Instagram users compared the new feature to rival social media company Snap Inc (NYSE: SNAP), whose app redesign was met with a similar negative reaction.

Users across the globe are reporting the app switched within the last hour.
