U.S unequivocal support encourages Israel build new illegal settlements”

On Tuesday, in a similar move, Tel Aviv approved plans to construct almost 750 settler units in the West Bank.

Israel's Higher Planning Committee approved 2,191 new housing units in Israeli settlements on December 25 and 26, though no building permits have been issued yet.

Ghassan Daghlas, an official who monitors settlement activities in the northern West Bank, said that Israeli settlers threw rocks at Palestinian vehicles passing by.

A defense ministry committee with responsibility for such projects on Tuesday and Wednesday approved the plans, the settlement watchdog Peace Now said in a statement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing government agreed Monday to dissolve parliament and call for early elections on April 9 - a move that was given final approval by legislators late Wednesday.

Netanyahu told them that "we'll see an attempt by the left-wing to overthrow our rule with the help of the media and others".

France on Thursday called on Israel to reconsider recently issued approvals for more than 2,000 settler homes in the occupied West Bank, saying they would violate worldwide law. According to Palestinian statistics, almost 640,000 Jewish settlers now live in 196 settlements built with Israeli government's approval, while more than 200 outposts without its approval extend along the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. The area, captured by Israel in 1967, is not sovereign Israeli territory, and Palestinians there are not Israeli citizens and do not have the right to vote.

"Such illegal actions are a deliberate campaign to destroy the two-state solution and to prevent the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital", he noted.
