Netflix Permanently Removes iTunes Billing for New Customers”

However, if you miss a payment, you won't be able to resubscribe through the iOS app.

While bypassing iTunes payments could affect smaller applications, it is doubtful that this decision will impact Netflix's subscription numbers in any way.

A few months back, Netflix stopped supporting iTunes billing in several markets and is now rolling out the change worldwide. From now, iOS users will not be able to signup directly from iTunes.

VentureBeat noted that Apple takes a 15 to 30% cut from in-app subscriptions, and that has been a growing point of contention between the tech giant and app developers. 'We no longer support iTunes as a method of payment for new members, ' a Netflix spokesperson told VentureBeat on Friday. "If you are now billed by iTunes, you can continue to use iTunes billing until your account is cancelled". Netflix wouldn't say exactly when this change took place for everyone, but confirmed that the rollout started late last month.

If you're an iOS user and you haven't yet jumped onto the Netflix train, things are going to be a little different for you. The welcome screen in the app will just show the Sign In or Recover Password buttons. If that subscription is canceled, and that user wants to sign-up for the Netflix service once again via iOS, then they would then need to go through the new subscription flow within Safari. However, the app developers have long griped over the significant chunk of revenue that they are leaving for Apple, or Google in the case of Android. This tactic has also been adopted by Spotify and Amazon's Kindle and Comixology apps which have all avoided Apple's tariffs by pushing users to an external browser to complete their purchases.
