Patient in Sweden being tested for Ebola after visiting Burundi

Patient in Sweden being tested for Ebola after visiting Burundi”

The patient's identity is still unknown, but is now in isolation at a University Hospital in Uppsala.

The hospital's chief medical officer said the young man had been in Burundi for around three weeks, and was exhibiting classic symptoms of hemorrhagic fever, including vomiting blood.

The specialist test to determine whether the Ebola virus is present is expected to be completed by Friday evening. "At this stage it is just a suspicion, other illnesses are entirely possible", a statement from regional health authorities in Uppsala, about 45 miles north of Stockholm, said. The hospital in Enkoping shut down its emergency room and monitored its staff after the patient displayed symptoms of Ebola.

The individual was admitted to Enköping hospital before being transferred to Uppsala. Ebola is one of the world's most unsafe diseases and killed over 11,000 people during an epidemic in Africa that started in 2014., while an outbreak is still active in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The largest outbreak was one in 2013-2016 in West Africa, where more than 28,000 cases were confirmed. The virus kills roughly half of those it infects, with better hospital care dramatically increasing patients' chances of survival.
