UAW sues GM over temporary workers, escalating fight over job cuts

The United Autoworkers Union has filed a lawsuit against General Motors, saying the automaker continues using temporary workers at its plant in Fort Wayne, Ind. instead of filling those jobs with some of the 690 union members who have been laid off from the GM Assembly Plant in Lordstown.

The UAW said numerous 690 Lordstown workers on layoff had applied to transfer to the openings at Fort Wayne.

The union filed a federal lawsuit in Cleveland alleging that GM has temporary workers at its pickup truck plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The union and GM agreed in May to allow temporary workers and extended the deal once, through August 31, according to documents filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court for Northern Ohio.

In a statement from a General Motors communications manager, the company says they have started to bring employees from Lordstown to Fort Wayne.

The union contends temporary workers are still employed and wants a judge to declare GM breached its contractual obligations.

"Late a year ago, GM started the process to bring about 50 Lordstown employees to Ft". The current labor contract was reached in 2015 and expires in September. The decision, which affects four U.S. plants including one in Warren, Ohio, drew the condemnation of U.S. President Donald Trump and members of Congress.

GM wouldn't say how many temporary workers are employed in Fort Wayne, but the company says it started the process late a year ago to bring in about 50 laid-off Lordstown workers.

The No. 1 US automaker has said the fate of the plants that have no future product allocated will be decided in talks with the UAW.

According to the suit, obtained by The Vindicator's broadcast partner 21-WFMJ-TV, GM continued the use the temporary workers even though the union rejected a request to extend the temporary employment until the end of February this year.
