The first meteor shower of the year peaks Friday morning at Midnight

The first meteor shower of the year peaks Friday morning at Midnight”

With its "bright fireball meteors" appearing at up to 200 an hour, the Quadrantids meteor shower is considered one of the best ones of the year, said the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on its website.

Thursday night, the Quadrantid meteor shower will produce a dazzling display in the sky for parts of the globe.

Nasa said the Quadrantids are "one of the best annual meteor showers".

This year, the peak will hit at around 2am GMT or 9pm EST according to the International Meteor Organization. The shower is expected to run into the early hours of Friday morning, so keep an eye on the sky. Those in Europe could wind up seeing the most meteors, which can range from 60 to over 100 during flawless conditions.

The Quadrantids show will begin late Thursday and run through dawn Friday in a dark sky unlit by a moon, and the southwestern and central USA will offer the best views. Unlike the Perseids and Geminids, the peak for this particular shower only lasts several hours.

Smashing at the Earth's atmosphere at 150,000 miles per hour, expect to see 20-40 meteors per hour. Compared with most other meteor showers, these are unusual as they are thought to have originated from a passing asteroid. Skies will likely be mainly to entirely clear in Michiana and surrounding parts of Indiana, Michigan and IL.

Check TIME AND DATE to see what your chances are like. Lie flat on your back with feet facing northeast and look up at the sky - it should take less than 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark.

We're also approaching a new moon on 5 January, so there won't be much of a lunar glow either.

So what is the history of this yearly meteor shower?

On January 5 and 6, depending on where you live, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in China, in North and South Korea, in Japan, in Russian Federation, and over the North Pacific Ocean and the Aleutian Islands.
