Decade-long NHS plan to tackle major killer conditions

Decade-long NHS plan to tackle major killer conditions”

And the plans aim to ensure three-quarters of cancers are diagnosed early, when they can be treated more successfully, up from half at present.

We will improve how the NHS cares for children and young people with learning disabilities and autism by ending inappropriate hospitalisation, reducing over-medicalisation, and providing quality care in the community.

Sarah Wilkinson, chief executive at NHS Digital, said: "The next generation of IT services for primary care must give more patients easy access to key aspects of their medical record and provide the highest quality technology for Global Positioning System".

More than three million people will benefit from improved stroke, respiratory and cardiac services over the next decade. That's why last year - in its 70th year - I committed to an ambitious funding proposal to help make the NHS fit for the future.

She said: 'As well as the implementation of these services in the NHS, the Government needs to introduce broader measures, such a minimum unit pricing for beer, wines and spirits, to achieve a largescale improvement in the population's health.

Following the publishing of the NHS's long-term plan today by Theresa May and NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens, a greater focus will be placed on integrated care, improving outcomes for major diseases, and the commitment to save up to 500,000 more lives over the next decade. Nearly 30 per cent of preventable deaths in England are due to non-communicable diseases specifically attributed to air pollution, the plan pointed out, and more than 2,000 GP practices and 200 hospitals are in areas affected by dangerously polluted air. Despite the 2bn increase to the existing £12bn a year now spent on mental health services in England, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPS) previously expressed concern that this figure is only half what is needed for the NHS to put spending more on par with that of physical health.

Mr Stevens said the plan "keeps all that's good about our health service and its place in our national life".

BMA board of science chair Professor Dame Parveen Kumar welcomed the plan but argued that more needs to be done, including bringing in minimum unit pricing.

Nuffield Trust policy analyst Sally Gainsbury said that this year, "the combined impact of staff pay rises, inflation and growing numbers of patients will mean it will face a cost pressure of £7.3bn". While £20bn has been promised to the front-line NHS budget, this will not support social care and public health services such as stop smoking and weight management which, at the end of 2018, it was announced would be cut by over 4% in real terms.

Kay Boycott, chief executive of Asthma UK, said smart inhalers were "game-changing devices" that "track how often and well people are taking their asthma medication so that those most at risk of asthma attacks can be identified and helped before they need hospital treatment". "There is an urgent need to act on this, and we look forward to working with NHS England to ensure better IT connectivity between optical practices and other parts of the NHS", Ms Alderman concluded.

However, experts have criticised the new plan, saying it failed to address the "harsh realities" caused by difficulties in recruitment and increased pressure on staff.

NHS Confederation chief executive Niall Dickson said: "We very much welcome the increased funding for the NHS and the vision to strengthen and improve services".

"This plan heralds an end of austerity for the NHS and as such marks the dawn of a new era - one in which we will need to transform the way services are delivered to patients and the public".

NHS England made repeated references to "clinical" pharmacists employed by GP practices in its long-term plan, including hailing them as "a key part of the general practice team in primary care networks".

"Not everything can be done at once, so as always there will be some careful choices to make", Mrs May said.
